It seems like every year I write a post about being busy at Christmastime. And it looks like this year will be no different.
Once again, I find myself sitting in my office, surrounded by piles of projects, staring out into the frigid, South Dakota wintery wasteland — wondering why the coffee is always gone and when the Christmas Spirit will come. But the fact is that — maybe like some of you reading this — I’m just too hammered by work, kids, home life, cultural holiday expectations, and the really, really cold weather to get excited.
So I’ve been trying to do all the things that get me into the Christmas mood. I made a list, you can read it here. When I went to HULU and checked their “The Joy of the Season” holiday specials list, I was excited to see the Mork and Mindy episode “Mork’s First Christmas”. I’d like to share with you some of the dialogue between Mindy and Mork.
Mindy: You see this Holiday is to celebrate the birth of one of Earth’s greatest man called Jesus Christ.
Mork: Oh, is that the guy with the glasses that runs Boulder Stereo?
Mindy: No. I don’t think that’s Him. You see, Jesus was a wise and wonderful man. That’s why this time of year brings out the best in people. It’s a time for caring and sharing — when you open your heart to your fellow man.
Mork: Oh, I see. For a few short weeks each year, humans try to act human.
Mindy: Well it’s a start!
Mork: Well it’s a darn good one!
That quick moment of seriousness from the late Robin Williams brought me back to reality. Christmastime isn’t about getting warm fuzzies. Though it’s okay to enjoy those, they aren’t the focus or the reason for this season. This season is a reset time. A time to remember who Jesus is, and who we are meant to be. A new start on the New Year. A chance to become more human, like Jesus.
What words would you share with someone feeling hammered by the season? Feel free to share your thoughts and ideas in the comment’s section. Seriously! We’re all in this together!
